Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Divorce Portal ("we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting the personal information you share with us. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

This policy applies to all users of divorce-portal.com and the Divorce Portal platform.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password (stored as a bcrypt hash — we never store your password in plain text). If you are an attorney, we may also collect your bar number and firm information.

2.2 Case Data

To generate divorce documents, we collect information you provide about your case, including names of parties, children's information, custody preferences, property details, and other case-specific data. This information is used solely to generate your documents.

2.3 Financial Information

For support calculations (child support, spousal support), we collect income information, employment details, and other financial data you provide. This data is used for calculations only and is encrypted using AES-256 encryption at rest.

Payment information (credit card numbers, billing addresses) is collected and processed directly by Stripe. We do not store your payment card details on our servers.

2.4 Usage Data

We collect basic usage data including pages visited, features used, session duration, and device/browser information. This helps us improve the platform. We do not currently use third-party analytics or tracking cookies.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Generate documents — Your case data is processed by our AI to create divorce documents tailored to your situation
  • AI processing — Case data is sent to OpenAI for AI-powered document generation (see Section 4 for details)
  • Process payments — Account and billing information is shared with Stripe to process your payments
  • Send communications — We use Resend to send transactional emails (account verification, password resets, document-ready notifications)
  • Improve the service — Usage data helps us identify issues and improve the platform
  • Provide support — Your account information helps us respond to your questions and requests

4. Third-Party Services

We share data with the following third-party services, strictly as needed to operate the platform:

4.1 OpenAI (AI Processing)

Your case data is sent to OpenAI's API for AI-powered document generation. OpenAI processes this data according to their API data usage policies. We use the API tier that does not use your data for model training.

4.2 Stripe (Payments)

Payment processing is handled by Stripe. When you make a purchase, your payment information is sent directly to Stripe and is subject to Stripe's Privacy Policy. We receive only a confirmation of payment and a customer ID — not your card details.

4.3 Resend (Email)

We use Resend to send transactional emails. Your email address and name are shared with Resend solely for the purpose of delivering emails related to your account (verification, password resets, document notifications).

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party. Ever.

5. Data Security

We protect your data with multiple layers of security:

  • Encryption at rest — All data stored in our PostgreSQL database is encrypted at rest
  • AES-256 encryption — Sensitive fields (financial data, personal identifiers) are encrypted with AES-256 before storage
  • Password hashing — Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and are never stored in plain text
  • HTTPS — All data in transit is encrypted using TLS/HTTPS
  • JWT authentication — Sessions are managed using signed JWT tokens
  • Role-based access — Access to data is restricted based on user roles (divorcee, attorney, admin)

6. Data Retention

Your case data is retained for 90 days after session completion. After this period, all case data is permanently deleted from our systems.

Account information (name, email) is retained as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all associated data is removed within 30 days.

You may request immediate deletion of your data at any time by contacting support@divorce-portal.com.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Correction — Request correction of inaccurate personal data
  • Deletion — Request deletion of your personal data and case information
  • Export — Request an export of your data in a portable format (JSON or CSV)

To exercise any of these rights, email us at support@divorce-portal.com. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Cookies and Local Storage

Divorce Portal uses minimal browser storage:

  • JWT token (localStorage)— Used to maintain your authenticated session. This is not a cookie but is stored in your browser's localStorage.
  • Cookie consent preference (localStorage) — Stores whether you have accepted our cookie notice.
  • Stripe session cookies — When you go through the Stripe checkout process, Stripe may set cookies necessary for payment processing.

We do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies, or any third-party tracking cookies. For more details, see our Cookie Policy.

9. Children's Privacy

Divorce Portal is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If we learn that we have collected data from a person under 18, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@divorce-portal.com.

10. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

  • Right to know — You can request details about the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you
  • Right to delete — You can request deletion of your personal information
  • Right to opt-out — We do not sell personal information, so this right is automatically satisfied
  • Right to non-discrimination — We will not discriminate against you for exercising your CCPA rights

To exercise your CCPA rights, contact us at support@divorce-portal.com. We will verify your identity before processing your request.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through a prominent notice on our platform at least 30 days before the changes take effect.

Your continued use of Divorce Portal after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
